Korea Women's Studies Institute (KWSI)

About KWSI

The Korea Women's Studies Institute (KWSI) was officially established in 1989 through the merger of the Women's History Research Association and the Ahyeon Women's Research Lab.  Nevertheless, the Institute regards 1985 - the publication year of the first issue of its journal Yeosung (Women) - as the true beginning of its organizational activities

Since its founding, KWSI has carried out research and produced scholarly work across a wide range of fields, including women's labor, feminist literature, women's history, family studies, feminist theory, and gender policy.  In 1999, the Institute was formally incorporated as a corporate association.

KWSI publishes its official peer-reviewed journal, Issues in Feminism, twice annually.  It has also produced several influential books, including Lectures on Women's Studies (1991), New Lectures on Women's Studies: Korean Society, Women, and Gender (2005), and Feminist Perspectives on Gender and Society (2014).

In addition to its publications, the Institute organizes seminars, lectures, and collaborative programs with variety of academic institutions and women's organizations, contributing to the development of women's studies and the promotion of gender equality.
